Amidst marked economic inequalities and a deep global economic recession, there is a renewed recognition of the importance of ending discrimination in all spheres of life. All of the world’s countries have committed to ending workplace discrimination in international agreements. National legislation is an important first step to ending discrimination and ensuring equal access to decent work, helping to end the cycle of poverty for the next generation.
Measuring prohibitions of workplace discrimination for 17 protected characteristics, including race/ethnicity, migrant status, sex, religion, family status, sexual orientation and gender identity, disability, and more, the WORLD Policy Analysis Center (WORLD) is releasing a sweeping, globally comparative dataset with over 100 indicators across 193 United Nations member states. Recently published in the journal Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, this systematic analysis of thousands of national laws related to workplace discrimination in all 193 UN member states represents the world’s most comprehensive assessment of national legislative guarantees to equality at work to date.
