Sonke Gender Justice works across Africa to achieve gender equality, prevent gender-based violence, and reduce the spread of HIV and AIDS. In addition to regional leadership across a range of issues, Sonke co-chairs the MenEngage Global Alliance, which seeks to engage men and boys to achieve gender equality and includes more than 400 civil society organizations from Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, North America, Asia, and Europe.
An example of WORLD’s data in partnership with Sonke Gender Justice:
- In 2015, in partnership with WORLD and the MenEngage Alliance, Sonke Gender Justice hosted a workshop in South Africa titled “Women’s Economic Empowerment, Child Rights, and Gender Equality Knowledge Exchange.” The workshop featured multiple presentations and points of discussion: global WORLD data from Jody Heymann, topic- and region-specific data from WORLD staff, findings on the role of public policy in moving women’s economic empowerment, and a participatory enquiry into responding to challenges. The workshop, which included representatives from 6 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa, brought together civil society representatives, international non-governmental organizations, researchers, and policymakers.
